The SACP also conveys its condolences to the entire football fraternity, including the players he helped to inspire into greatness over the many decades of his work.
Clive Barker will be remembered as the first coach to lead the senior male football national squad, Bafana Bafana, to glory when he inspired them to conquer the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations, staged on home soil. He also led the squad to the first ever qualification for the FIFA World Cup in 1998. Over the years, he continued to be an inspirational sporting figure to millions of our people, helping young football to realise their full potential and thereby inspiring an entire nation.
In paying tribute to Clive Barker, the SACP calls for more investment on development of sports in our country, including football. Further, the SACP calls for more access to sports for the people of our country, the majority of whom are working-class and poor.
