SACP sends heartfelt condolences to the family of Auditor General Kimi Makwetu

12 November 2020

The South African Communist Party (SACP) sends its heartfelt condolences to the family of Auditor General Kimi Makwetu, who died yesterday, Wednesday 11 November 2020. The SACP also sends condolences to his colleagues as well as the people of South Africa, who have been direct beneficiaries of Makwetu’s work as Auditor General.

Makwetu’s contribution to the improvement of the culture of accountability speaks for itself. He deservedly received great commendation from various quarters of our country for his honesty in conducting his work. Due to his constructive criticism of government, generally, in its management of public resources, the country witnessed important improvements with regard to accountability measures in the various departments and spheres of government.

The SACP is honoured to have had an opportunity to be addressed by Makwetu before he met his death. On 28 August 2020, he took part in the SACP’s National Conference to Intensify the Campaign to Stop Corruption, which was organised under the themeRoll back the corrupting intersection between private accumulation and public service! Defend our Democracy!” In that discussion, he emphasised, among other matters, the critical role of the SACP in making sure that, in the anti-corruption fight, the preventative attitude that ought to be part of the arsenal of tools that we have in place is embraced – as well as getting to the root causes of corruption, beyond the known corrupt individuals, who, no doubt, must be brought to book.

The SACP calls upon the people of our country to unite in a decisive fight against the looters of our economy, against the legacy of the corporate capture of the state and monopoly capital. The working class must play a decisive leading role in the defence of our state owned entities and against all forms of corruption, including exposing and defeating all corrupt activities between the private sector and the public sector.
