The South African Communist Party (SACP) in Moses Mabhida Province (KwaZulu-Natal) welcomes the arrival of 28 Cuban medical professionals in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. KwaZulu-Natal has a high number of Cuban trained doctors, trained through the Cuba-South Africa Medical Doctors Training Programme. We salute Cuba for its spirit of working-class internationalism when it comes to healthcare.
Cuba has dispatched doctors to dozens of countries throughout the world to fight the pandemic, despite the devastating decades-old illegal economic embargo imposed upon the country by the United States regime. Decades of economic isolation failed to break Cuba’s revolutionary spirit of international solidarity.
We believe that we were right when we lobbied for the continued relations and expansion of the Cuba-South Africa programme in order to ensure that our country does not rely on a single school of thought as far as the approach to healthcare is concerned. The Cuban medical school of thought is more preventative in approach. It is centred in communities where doctors have a more direct relationship with members of the community, hence they are able to intervene timeously to prevent a number of diseases. Cuba understood the need to invest more in poor rural people.
We believe that working with the Cuban doctors, our provincial government will not only allocate them districts and localities where they will be deployed. They must also form a critical resource and be able to give advice to the Provincial Coronavirus Command Centre to allow all the critical voices to add value in our fight against the pandemic.
The SACP in Moses Mabhida supports Cuba-South Africa relations, against the onslaught and interference of the United States undermining the Cuban people’s right to self-determination. We applaud our government for continuing to strengthen the long established ties between our peoples. We know that Cuba will continue to offer progressive ideas in the battle against imperialism. We welcome Cuban doctors and we know our communities will embrace them as they have in the past.
The struggle for a better caring world continues and Cuba will always be part of that struggle.
