Friday 7 November 2025:- The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Northern Cape has noted the resignation by the MEC responsible for Health, Comrade Maruping Lekwene on Wednesday 5 November 2025. We equally note the acceptance of his resignation by the premier of the province. As the SACP in the Northern Cape, we are neither surprised nor shocked by this development.
The decision by our government and the 7th administration to fully embrace neo-liberalism and impose austerity by cutting social spending has caused serious challenges for the department of health to provide quality health care to the masses of our people.
The working class and poor communities across the province continue to face key challenges relating to access to quality public health care services. The chronic-shortage of staff, rampant corruption and looting of resources in the department of health, the safety of workers and a growing access to water crises faced by many facilities across the province require urgent attention.
In this regard, the SACP calls on the premier to urgently appoint a suitably qualified MEC to provide strategic leadership to the department.
We further call on government not to commodify health care but to adequately fund the department so that our people can have access to quality health whilst addressing inefficiencies and corruption.
