SACP Gauteng expresses deep concern following the tragic incident in Johannesburg CBD

31 August 2023

The South African Communist Party (SACP) Gauteng Province is deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred in the heart of Johannesburg's Central Business District, resulting in the loss of 73 lives and leaving more than 50 individuals injured. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives, and we extend our heartfelt condolences during this incredibly difficult time.

We wish to convey our sincere sympathies to all those affected by this devastating fire. We stand united with the community, offering our support and solidarity as they navigate through this painful ordeal. To those who have been injured, we send our well wishes for a swift and complete recovery. The resilience and strength of the people of Gauteng will undoubtedly carry them through this trying period.

In light of this tragedy, the SACP Gauteng Province appeals to all residents and workers in the affected area to actively cooperate with the evacuation measures put in place by the authorities. The safety and well-being of every individual is of paramount importance. We understand the challenges that lie ahead in terms of both safety and livelihoods, and we urge all stakeholders to come together in assisting those affected to rebuild their lives.

Furthermore, we call for a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident. The investigation should help us to ascertain whether certain individuals are financially exploiting marginalised residents of the city.

Additionally, it's essential to determine if authorities have been negligent in ensuring the safety and well-being of the city's inhabitants.

As the SACP we believe that part of the problem of the city of Johannesburg are the legacy issues of mining cities which include environmental degradation, abandoned infrastructure, economic instability after mining activities decline, and social challenges due to population shifts and displacement. These factors contribute to escalating social crises, necessitating a more strategic and proactive approach rather than the current ad hoc methods.
