The SACP condemns illegal arrest of Palestinian activist, calls for his release and the release of all Palestinian political prisoners from the apartheid Israeli regime prisons and detentions

15 August 2020, Saturday, Johannesburg

The South African Communist Party joins the many voices calling for the release of Palestinian activist Mahmoud Nawaja, co-ordinator and leader of the global movement of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against the apartheid Israeli regime. We have been informed that on 30 July 2020 a legion of Israeli forces raided the home of Nawaja near Ramallah, blindfolded, handcuffed and detained him.

As an apartheid regime, the Israeli regime has a tendency to operate among others through gangster tactics and mafiosostrategies. The arbitrary detention of Nawaja is an Israeli pattern of relentless intimidation and violence waged on Palestinians opposed to the oppressive Israeli regime, especially human rights defenders and activists.

We join activists around the world in calling for the immediate release of Comrade Nawaja and all political detainees in Israeli jails.

The Israeli regime should be reminded that it was Apartheid South Africa that adopted the same modus operandi but yet succumbed to the popular movement for freedom. We will continue to work with the Palestinian liberation and solidarity movements to actively express our solidarity with the Palestinian people.

The SACP will continue to work closely with the broader Palestine solidarity movement in actively ensuring the freedom of Nawaja, and has supported the #Africa4Palestine protest that took place yesterday, Friday 14 August 2020 at the Israeli Embassy in Johannesburg calling for the release of Nawaja and all Palestinian political prisoners.
