1 February 2018
The South African Communist Party pledges its solidarity with the 950 mineworkers trapped underground at the Beatrix Mine in the Free State Province, their families and the labour movement during this difficult time. The SACP calls on the mine bosses to speed up rescue operations; ensure that all mineworkers return alive as a matter of urgency.
The SACP further calls for a thorough investigation of the accident and the mine as a whole. Government must act holistically but urgently to stop the generally prevailing problem of mine accidents and fatalities.
On Monday, 5 February is the second anniversary of the deadly Lily Mine accidents where mine workers who got trapped underground in 2016 were neither rescued nor recovered. The Beatrix Mine accident is rubbing salt into the wound suffered by mine workers and the excruciating pain endured by their families. It cannot be business as usual. Radical measures must be undertaken to bring an end to the scourge.
