Statement on claims of Party funding by Numsa leaders

22 December 2013

The SACP rejects dirty money with the contempt it deserves

The South African Communist Party (SACP) has noted claims from some leaders of the National Union of Metalworkers (NUMSA) suggesting that they have been funding the the Party. If there is funding that these leaders have channeled elsewhere in the name of the SACP they must come out and say who exactly they were really funding. The SACP is not funded by these leaders.

Concerning political funding paid to the South African Congress Trade Unions (COSATU)

The political fund to Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is not meant for the SACP only, but several organizations, including the African National Congress, National Labour and Economic Development Institute (Naledi) and student formations Congress of South African Students and South African Students Congress. However, whilst appreciating support from workers, the SACP has not received funding from the political fund for the past three years. The decision by NUMSA`s leaders to withdraw contribution to the political fund will therefore have no impact over the SACP.

The SACP our focus is and we will continue to work together with COSATU, with which we are in alliance, to defend the federation and build its strengthen its unity. As the SACP we are interested in a strong, independent and militant COSATU that is part of the revolutionary alliance but neither the conveyor belt of the Party nor any of its allied partners. Matters of funding are a subject of bilateral engagements with our ally COSATU.
