The SACP in the Brian Bunting District (Cape Metro) is concerned about the extent of floods in Cape Town. In the City alone, more than 30 000 households are affected by these severe floods. The only plan the DA led Administration has ever had is to place affected families in community halls and return them back after rainfalls to the same conditions of vulnerability. As a result same communities suffer devastating floods repeatedly over and over, year to year.
The DA has failed provide poor communities with housing, roads and storm water systems in order to prevent and mitigate against such disasters afflicting many poor communities with misery. The DA led administration lacks leadership resulting in poor planning. Existing Infrastructure in our working class communities is ageing as a result of poor maintenance by the ruling DA.
The DA administration deliberately neglects infrastructure development needs of poor communities but spends its capital infrastructure budget developing luxuries of the rich suburbs developing bus lanes and cycle lanes neglecting areas that desperately need infrastructure the most. This is not different to apartheid racist segregationist policies and impoverishment of the Black majority.
In this City of Cape Town, the DA is actually concerned about seeking international media attention including recent decision to award Obama the freedom of the city whilst the majority people are sinking in floods.
We thank the all disaster relief agencies and NGOs such as Red Cross, Mustadafin that are working hard in making sure our communities are supported during these trying times. It is also unacceptable that the same communities that were victims of floods the past years to be still in the same conditions even today. We therefore call working class communities to raise and act against these ills committed by the DA in this City of Cape Town.
