Re: Remembering our fallen Hero: Former National Chairperson of the SACP - Joe Slovo

5 January 2011

The South African National Apex Tertiary Co-operative Ltd (SANACO) wishes to join the South African Communist Party and its alliance in remembering an advocate of the people, Advocate Joe Slovo. SANACO is the representative body for all cooperatives in the country and believes that in memory of the late JS, cooperatives has a role to play in bettering the lives of the majority of the people the late represented with distinction.

To date, since SANACO`s formation in 2009, the movement has manage to reach out to many primary cooperatives across the country, mostly found in deep rural areas of South Africa. SANACO welcomes the initiative to establish the Joe Slovo Foundation and shares the strategic thrust of the foundation, as a movement of co-operatives the organisation pledges its complete support for the Foundation and will do all possible to assist it to achieve its set objective.

During his time, Joe Slovo, became the first Minister of Housing in the first democratically elected government of the Republic of South Africa and was very much instrumental in negotiating an agreement with South African banks to finance low-cost housing, this was indeed a sign of a leadership that has the interest of his people at heart. He wrote many historical documents amongst others the "sunset clause" that paved the way for the Government of National Unity under President Nelson Mandela, furthermore the first democratically elected President, President Nelson Mandela conferred on Slovo the ANC`s highest honour Isithwalandwe-Seaparankoe for his life-long and distinguished contribution to the struggle.

The SANACO will for this important year, focus on the strengthening of the housing co-operative sectors as well as establish new ones. The main focus area though not limited to will be the rural area, the women and the disable. This will amongst others be the contribution that the SANACO will seek to remember Advocate Joe Slovo about, more importantly the movement will sustain these activities and will from time to time brief the public on progress made in realizing the vision of the late Advocate Joe Slovo.

Long Live the Spirit of Joe Slovo Long Live!!!!!!
