SACP statement on the passing away of cde Jean Middleton

21 December 2010

The SACP has received with sadness the news of the passing away of one of our stalwarts, Cde Jean Middleton.

Cde Jean joined the anti-apartheid movement and the South African Communist Party at the time when it was not fashionable, and in fact during a time where it was extremely dangerous to do so. Her activism and commitment to a truly non racial, non sexist and democratic South Africa earned her nothing else but consistent police harassment and detention.

Cde Jean was part of the people who were arrested by the apartheid regime and charged with furthering the aims of the SACP or being office-bearers, officers, or members of the party. In her honour we must defeat the creeping modern-day anti communism which is being led by, amongst others, the racialised and liberal Democratic alliance and other liberal apologists, including the mainstream media. In honour of Cde Jean we must reaffirm, as the SACP celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2011, that Socialism is the Future!!

Cde Jean held various leadership positions including being the editor of Sechaba and of the African Communist and Umsebenzi after the unbanning of the SACP. In her honour the SACP commits to strengthen its fight against the liberal offensive launched against our movement and its values in the mainstream media and other key sites of power in our society.

To her family and friends we dip our red banner and we say our deepest condolences.

Issued by the SACP.
