SACP statement on SACCAWU strike at Woolworths

Over the weekend, the SACP received a briefing from SACCAWU on the ongoing strike of the workers at Woolworths.

Delegates expressed their shock and dismay at the manner in which the management of the company has continued to treat the workers and the union. The management of Woolworths has continued to abuse our legal system by challenging all the rulings that went against them on the issues of the recognition of the trade union, thus suppressing the constitutional right to freedom of association.

Casualisation and meagre wages continues to be the order of the day at Woolworths. This is against high wages to the CEO whilst ordinary workers continue to earn as little as R 1 600.

Delegates unanimously pledged their support for the boycott aimed at isolating Woolworths and assisting the workers to enjoy the freedom that so many died fighting for. In that regard, the SACP calls on all South Africans to boycott Woolworths and come out in their numbers to join the National Day of Action on the 3rd October 2008 to march to BUSA.

We call on government and the labour department to take a firm stance against such a blatant disregard of our laws.

The SACP will work with SACCAWU to mobilize for the National Day of Action and we call on all our members in other provinces to join the lunch hour pickets at all Woolworth’s stores.
