26 August 2008
The SACP has learnt with sadness and shock of the passing away of Cde January Masilela, the Secretary of Defense after being involved in a car accident.
Comrade Che, as he was affectionately known amongst comrades, has dedicated his life to fighting injustice and bettering the lives of the people of our country. He was indeed a humble servant of the people.
From the re-launch of the SACP structures in Mpumalanga he served in the PEC of the SACP as Provincial Secretary of the SACP and he later became Deputy Provincial Secretary after he was asked to take up the position of Provincial Secretary of the ANC. He later became the Deputy Chairperson of the SACP in the Province and maintained his position as PEC member until he left the province to take up the position as the Secretary for Defense in 2000.
The SACP dips its red banner to this hero of our struggle. An educator, a soldier of liberation par excellence! The ideals that he lived for continues to inspire us today as we deepen the struggle for Socialism.
Our condolences to his family, friends and comrades.
