SACP statement on the latest Shenaningans at the SABC

7 April 2008

The SACP has noted the recent events at the SABC that involves the suspension of the Head of News, Dr Snuki Zikalala and the retaliation by the board in suspending the Group Chief Executive Officer, Adv Dali Mpofu.

“Hegel remarks somewhere that all great world-historic facts and personages appear, so to speak, twice. He forgot to add: the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce.” –Karl Marx, The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte.

The suspension of Dr Snuki Zikalala is long overdue. His return to the SABC from government was indeed a farce. Dr Zikalala has become a huge liability to the public broadcaster and his actions have severely compromised the impartiality and objectivity of SABC news. The SACP welcomes this firm action to rid itself of what has come to be years of censure and using the public broadcaster for narrow factional political battles led by Dr Zikalala.

Unfortunately the actions of the board in retaliating for the correct action undertaken by the GCEO, have now confirmed beyond any reasonable doubt the fact that the board has been in cohorts with some of the elements hell- bent to lead the SABC down the drain. Their actions have only served to strengthen our call that this board must resign. We demand parliament to immediately pass the motion of no confidence on this board and put measures to immediately dissolve this board and appoint a new one.
