SACP statement on the motion passed by the Portfolio Committee on Communications

30 April 2008

The SACP has learned over media reports of the motion of no confidence passed on the SABC Board by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communications.

We welcome this move and would like to reiterate our call to these illegitimate board members to do the honorable thing and resign. This board has not enjoyed any legitimacy in the eyes of the majority of our people since it was imposed on the ANC component of the portfolio committee by some of the past ANC leaders.

We call on parliament to amend legislation to dismiss this board should their political masters advice them not to heed the people’s call. This should be a lesson that institutions meant to serve the public, and not least the public broadcaster, are not instruments of political gimmick by the elite and those in power.

We are also concerned about the fact that some senior members of the executive are micro managing and instructing the board to act in the manner that undermines the confidence of our people in the SABC. The SACP calls on all our people to support this action by the portfolio committee and be vigilant to protect their broadcaster.
