SACP statement on the public spats by alliance leaders

4 November 2007

The SACP has noted the articles that appeared in the City Press today titled, “Vavi, Lekota spar verbally again” and “Walter Sisulu warned of Vavi, says Lekota”.

The SACP is deeply disturbed by the highly personalised attack by the ANC National Chairperson, Cde Terror Lekota against the General Secretary of COSATU, Cde Zwelinzima Vavi. This is the kind of behaviour that as the SACP we have consistently warned against as it violates all alliance protocols that we are supposed to abide by. It is this kind of behaviour that underlines our call that we do really need change now in the nature and functioning of the alliance. It is this kind of behaviour that has also caused tensions between sections of the ANC leadership and its alliance partners.

As the SACP we are concerned about what seems to be an open attack on each other in the run up to Limpopo conference. It is very important that we always bear in mind that no matter what differences may be there and no matter what the stakes are in the run up to the ANC Conference, we must at all times protect our movement. We must also desist from public grandstanding that may cause irreparable damage to the ANC and the alliance. There will still be an ANC and the alliance after December and therefore we must not behave as if the world is coming to an end.

Unfortunately the conduct of the National Chairperson of late is deeply worrying and we urge him to lead by example by seeking to unite rather than contributing towards unnecessary stresses and tensions.

As the SACP we commit ourselves to continue to play a uniting and constructive role even during these challenging times of the movement as a whole. Yes at this times we do need robust, frank, honest but comradely debates focusing our attention on the key challenges facing the National Democratic Revolution.

Issued by the SACP.
