Pay workers a decent wage

29 October 2007

The SACP is deeply concerned about the extent to which to which construction workers at various sites of construction of 2010 stadia and other mega projects continue to be subjected to appalling working conditions and poor salaries.

When we FIFA awarded South Africa the rights to organise the 2010 Soccer World Cup, the country celebrated in anticipation of reaping the promises of the bid which amongst others should be for ordinary South Africans including creation of decent and quality jobs.

The conduct of these construction companies is reflective of the unprincipled conduct of business in seeking to always turn people's victories into enriching themselves.

The silence of the 2010 LOC and the government is extremely disturbing when the ordinary citizens are subjected to humiliating and meagre salaries. The SACP supports the call by workers and their trade unions for an increase to the amounts that they are paid per hour. We call on government and the Ministry of Labour to specifically intervene to safeguard the interest of the workers and the poor.

Never should we allow the glamour of hosting big events to come at the expense of the working class and the poor.

We wish to pledge our full support to the workers, the NUM and other unions defending the interests of the construction workers
