The SACP regards the statement attributed to Cde Smuts Ngonyama (Sowetan, Wednesday July 19, 2006), ANC Spokesperson, as extremely unfortunate, unwarranted and with no basis.

Whilst the ANC NEC has clearly pronounced itself on issues related to the so-called “succession”, it comes as a shock that Cde Smuts would publicly reopen fictitious succession battles, contrary to the NEC decision.
The SACP has tabled its resolution for the opening of an inquest into the death of comrade Chris Hani in the alliance and the matter is being discussed at that level. We would like to urge all in the alliance to remain sensitive to making remarks that inadvertently protect the broader right wing plot involved in the assassination of our late General Secretary.
The SACP remains firm on its believe that there was a broader right wing involvement and would not be swayed by such remarks intended to allow circumstances surrounding the death of Cde Chris Hani to be swept under the carpet.
To this end we reiterate our call for an inquest to be opened into the death of Cde Chris Hani.
