SACP Central Commitee Meeting Starts 15-16th August

The Central Committee (CC) of the South African Communist Party (SACP) will hold its fifth plenary session on Friday and Saturday this week (15 and 16 August).

CC AGENDA

In its agenda, the CC will discuss the following:

• Political Report from the SACP Secretariat
• The state of the trade union movement and the challenges facing the 8th COSATU Congress
• Preparations for the 2003 Red october Campaign
• The SACP and the 2004 elections: Report and Recommendations

POLITICAL REPORT

The focus of the Political Report will be on the state of the progressive social movement in our country, the 2004 elections and the challenges facing the SACP on these matters. Specifically, the Political Report will conduct an extensive analysis of the social movement under the following sub-headings:

• The state of the social movement after the 1994 democratic breakthrough
• The civic movement and ‘MDM’ formations
• What we knew as the Mass Democratic Movement
• A progressive women’s movement and transformation of gender relations
• Single issue campaigns/movements
• Struggles for sustainable livelihoods and survivalist networks
• The Co-operative Sector and a progressive co-operative movement
• The rural sphere and the institution of traditional leadership
• Local institutional structures (Ward Committees, School Governing Bodies,Community Policing Forums)
• Working class institutions and the NGO/CBO sector
• The urban informal settlements and the minibus taxi sector
• Faith based organizations, cultural and sporting formations, “moral re-generation”, and solidarity work
• Cultural and sporting formations
• Moral regeneration
• Solidarity struggles
• The Economic, Social and Cultural Council of the African Union

This analysis will be located in the context of the emerging working class medium term vision following the release of internal discussion documents by both the SACP and COSATU, independent of each other. The SACP has placed for debate within its structures a Medium Term Vision for the next 10-12 years, which addresses what kind of society we want to see in South Africa by the end of the second decade of our freedom in 2014. At its last CEC (16-17 July), COSATU received and extensively debated "Vision 2015".
