Blade Nzimande to Visit East Rand Schools on the First Day of the School Year

14 January 2002

The South African Communist Party (SACP) fully supports the ANC Programme of Action for the year 2002 based on the slogan Year of the Volunteer for Reconstruction and Development. The SACP's own Programme of Action for 2002 is based on co-operation between people and government and the building of people's power and a people's economy in order to meet basic needs.

To kick off this programme, the SACP General Secretary, Comrade Blade Nzimande, will visit schools in Vosloorus and Tembisa on 16 January 2002 as part of the ANC-SACP-COSATU-SANCO programme to ensure a successful start to the school year.

The programme for Comrade Nzimande's visit is as follows:

1. At Lethulwazi High School - Vosloorus (The school is in Moagi Street, Mfundo Park Section next to the former Kathorus College of Education)

2. At Masibulele Comprehensive School - Tembisa (The school is in Jiyane Section, Tembisa).

In addition to this visit, all SACP provinces and districts have also been mobilised to conduct similar visits in local schools throughout the country. These visits will be the SACP's contribution in ensuring that the admissions and registration process is smooth and that effective learning and teaching from day one.

These visits are part of the mobilisation of communities to undertake voluntary and other work, with the support and co-operation of government, to build public schools into sustainable community resources and to ensure that meaningful progress is made in the year 2002 to eradicate the legacy of apartheid education. Following the month of January, the key challenge which SACP structures, in co-operation with communities and local organisations, will follow up is problems such as the return of material and books removed from schools, the building of School Governing Bodies, maintenance of schools, and continuing learning and teaching.

A people's education and mobilisation of the people remain critical in the meeting of basic needs and the building of people's power.
