During the month of July, the South African Communist Party (SACP), the oldest and largest communist party on the African continent, will celebrate 80 years of its existence in South Africa under the theme 80 Years of Unbroken Struggle for National Liberation, People's Power and Socialism. The SACP was founded in Cape Town on 29 to 31 July 1921.

The SACP will launch the Celebrations as detailed below.

DATE : Thursday, 28 June 2001
TIME : 11h00 - 13h30
VENUE : Johannesburg City Hall

This launch will be attended by more than 1500 members and supporters of the SACP and shopstewards of COSATU affiliates in the Wits region. The programme for the launch will include messages of support from the ANC, COSATU and other organisations a Worker's Assembly to conduct a Public Evaluation of the SACP, its history and future challenges and an SACP response by Blade Nzimande, the SACP General Secretary.

This Public Evaluation of the SACP through Worker's and People's Assemblies will continue throughout the month of July. What does this 80 years of the SACP represent? What has the SACP achieved in this 80 years? What is its current role? What is its future? What is the relevance of socialism to South Africa? These are just some of the questions which will be addressed in these Assemblies.

Through these Assemblies the SACP expresses its confidence in the people and their confidence in the SACP as the leading political force in the struggle for socialism in our country, said Blade Nzimande.
