'DA trying to rewrite our history'

SA COMMUNIST Party general secretary Blade Nzimande has accused the DA of attempting to subvert the role of Nelson Mandela in the Struggle and while they used his image, failed to state that he had taken up arms against the apartheid regime.

"The DA in particular is on a very dangerous project. The DA is quietly, cleverly trying to rewrite our history. They're trying to represent a story as if there was no national oppression in this country, as if the ANC never led that struggle," said Nzimande.

And while the DA boasted about running an "efficient municipality", it only served areas like Constantia and the party was not talking about the rest of the city.

"It's shameful that the mayor was once in the PAC… where is her Africanism?"

He was speaking at CPUT, addressing mostly students on the last day of a campaign trip to the Western Cape for the ANC.

An hour late after being delayed by the South African Union of Students, Nzimande was greeted with struggle songs when he eventually made it into an auditorium of around 200 students and ANC supporters.

"It's always important to remind ourselves where we come from; it's important for our young people to have an interest in history.

"It's so that those who want to distort our history… are not allowed to do that. We must not forget that Comrade Mandela was a revolutionary; he took up arms against the apartheid regime."

While the ANC was often under attack by opposition parties, he said the party was often too modest about its achievements. Nzimande boasted that the ANC government had "three million houses built" since 1994 and had connected more homes to the country's electricity grid than the apartheid government had ever done.
