SACP says Hawks carrying a political agenda

18 May 2016 4:50 PM

The South African Communist Party has come out heavily against Hawks investigation of Minister of Finance, Pravin Gordhan.

The SACP says this investigation reflects politically motivated, factional and private agendas of the Hawks.

Yesterday, Gordhan also released a statement saying he is innocent. He alleges that there are certain agencies of government that have conspired to intimidate and harass him.

On Sunday, the Sunday Times reported that Gordhan could be arrested for his role in the creation of a controversial South African Revenue Service unit.

Xolani Gwala spoke to Solly Mapaila, Second Deputy General Secretary of the South African Communist Party about their stance regarding Hawks investigation on Gordhan.

We don't have a problem with the Hawks as an institution. We want that institution to function optimally to deal with crime, and do investigation without fear, favor and bias. But justly, not imposing harassment on individuals.

- Solly Mapaila, Second Deputy General Secretary of the South African Communist Party

What we have raised is that when issues of that institution are now shared with the public, show that they are politically motivated, they carry out a specific agenda of the grouping of people. We have pointed out that is unacceptable.

- Solly Mapaila, Second Deputy General Secretary of the South African Communist Party

You can see the way they operate is to try and identify individuals on the basis of factional agendas inside our movements that are operated through government, which is exactly what's happening to comrade Pravin.

- Solly Mapaila, Second Deputy General Secretary of the South African Communist Party

State institutions must stay above party politics. They must reaffirm the confidence of our people in the democratic dispensation that our comrades died fighting for. And should not be corrupted by individuals who are carry out party politics and factional agendas.

- Solly Mapaila, Second Deputy General Secretary of the South African Communist Party
