African National Congress (ANC)  National Executive Committee (NEC) member, Gugile Nkwinti, and South African Communist Party`s (SACP) central committee member, Buti Manamela, say self-criticism and introspection is imperative if the ANC is to deal decisively with the triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequalities. The two shared a stage during the Chris Hani Memorial Lecture in Mahikeng in the North West.

Manamela believes slain former SACP General Secretary, Chris Hani, would have been dismayed by a culture of self-serving interests and factionalism in the mass democratic movement.

Manamela says, "What we see now is everything for the individual, and nothing for the organisation and the revolution. Has the idea of selflessness escaped our comrades and are all our decisions are based on where and when will my next meal come from?"

Although Hani is a difficult character to emulate, his views about post-liberation ills should be a guiding tool in finding solutions to challenges, confronting the ANC and its alliance partners, the pair say.

Nkwinti says, "We must allow the formations of many democratic formations in this country."

The lecture also made an appeal to the youth structures to safeguard and advocate for the interests of the poor and the working class.
