The South African Communist Party (SACP) will be marching to Avalon Cemetery in Soweto in remembrance of Joe Slovo on Wednesday morning.

The Lithuanian-born liberation icon was the National Chairperson of the SACP at the time of his death in 1995.

He was instrumental in the setting up of uMkhonto weSizwe and later served as Housing Minister in the first democratic cabinet.

He died after a long battle with cancer and was buried at Avalon.

SACP spokesperson Maleka Malesela says, "It’s an important event in that we are commemorating one of the heroes of our struggle Joe Slovo who played the role of an intellectual leader in our movement. If you are writing about the conditions of oppression and liberation, almost every document in our liberation struggle dating from the days of his involvement in the struggle bears his contribution."
