The spate of xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals was a key issue addressed at the launch of Chris Hani Commemoration month in Lenyenye, Limpopo on Sunday.

Various speakers at the Chris Hani Memorial lecture held by the South African Communist Party (SACP) at Vaal Reefs, near Klerkledorp, in North West, have condemned the recent spate of attacks on foreign nationals throughout the country.

SACP central committee member Charles Setsubi urged people in the northern part of the country, especially in Limpopo, to be proactive in order to deal with xenophobia as it is spreading from the south coast to the north. Calling on the community members in Limpopo, Setsubi says they must have mechanisms and strategies in place to deal with xenophobia, before it is too late. He added that xenophobia goes against what Hani, and other SACP leaders such as Moses Kotane stood for.

Also speaking at the event was ANC Provincial executive member Joe Maswanganyi and Provincial ANC Secretary Dakota Legoete.

Maswanganyi says as the liberation movement, they have a responsibility of dealing with the problems of xenophobia and tribalism. He proclaimed that whoever is promoting attacks on foreign nationals is wrong. Legoete added that the attacks need to be condemned daily.

Setsubi spoke about the role of the SACP in addressing the problems of the country and its ruling party, saying that the SACP does not need an invitation to intervene in the problems facing the ANC and Cosatu saying that SACP is part of both the ANC and Cosatu. He says, "ANC is our own organisation, we fought under this banner and we belong to it. We don`t want to be invited within the ranks of the ANC but it is our right to defend the ANC or the labour movement. We must demand to be where things are happening."
