The new South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) national executive committee has dissolved its national conference in Bloemfontein without voting for a new leadership. The conference has been marred by infighting, despite a plea by President Thabo Mbeki for unity in the movement. Delegates had mixed feelings about the turn of events.
Elections for the national executive committee had previously been delayed in Bloemfontein, where the organisation is holding its fourth national conference.
Earlier this evening two motions have been put forward by 872 delegates. Some delegates had suggested that the existing NEC be dissolved while others said it should be given another mandate. The dissolution came hours after President Thabo Mbeki called for unity during his address to the conference.
Mbeki said the leadership of SANCO should stop fighting for positions and instead fight to effect positive changes in the lives of South Africans.
