More than 200 people have been killed in road accidents around the country since the start of the holidays, according to the Road Traffic Management Corporation at the Transport Department.
Spokesperson Ntau Letebele yesterday said 215 people had died in 189 accidents in just six days. Of these, 79 were passengers, 74 pedestrians and 62 drivers. The province with the highest number of serious accidents was KwaZulu Natal, with 41 since December 1.
Gauteng reported 36 accidents, North West 28, Mpumalanga 25, the Eastern Cape 23, the Western Cape 21 and Limpopo 18, while the Northern Cape reported five. Letebele attributed 90% of fatal crashes to bad driver behaviour and attitude. - Sapa
