JOHANNESBURG - The knives are out, with the Young Communist League calling for the head of Dali Mpofu, the SABC's chief executiveofficer.

This is after The Star revealed that the public broadcaster paid more than R100 000 for Mpofu to be featured on the front cover of the glossy Leadership magazine.

"Day in and out, we are told the SABC has no money. But Mpofu has the audacity to abuse taxpayers' money. If he wants to appear in glossy magazines, he must go to Hollywood," said Young Communist League of South Africa spokesman Castro Ngobese.
The money could, he said, have been used for program- mes to benefit the public. The league is urging that Mpofu resign at once, for "abusing the public's money through cheap transactional publicity".

Kaizer Kganyago, SABC spokesman, said Mpofu was not going anywhere.

"He was not acting in his personal capacity, it was publicity for the SABC's new strategy. He is custodian of the strategy," said Kganyago. "Everything was above board."
