JOHANNESBURG - A man died and 13 people were seriously injured during a head-on collision between a taxi and Mercedes Benz on Main Reef Road near High Gate Shopping Mall yesterday.
According to people at the scene of the accident the taxi was at a standstill at the traffic lights. It is alleged the driver of the Mercedes tried to avoid a car that was coming from the south when the accident took place.
Also over the weekend, a truck carrying vehicles to be delivered lost control and overturned on the R24 highway in Kempton Park, causing serious traffic delays.
The driver control after trying to avoid a vehicle that had cut across two lanes on the highway to take the off-ramp to OR Tambo International Airport.
Ekurhuleni Metro police spokesman Inspector Mveli Nhlapo said the driver of the vehicle that caused the accident did not stop at the accident scene and fled after seeing the truck overturn.
The truck was carrying three bakkies and six cars that were all damaged beyond repair. The R24 from Johannesburg into Kempton Park and the airport was closed for four hours.
