Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Brigitte Mabandla refused to comment yesterday on the arrest of Glenn Agliotti in connection with the murder of Brett Kebble.
At a briefing of cabinet's justice, crime prevention and security cluster in parliament, Mabandla would only say that Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula was expected to make a statement.
Asked whether National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi should now be investigated because of his ties with Agliotti, the minister said there was no evidence to suggest that Selebi was involved in wrongdoing.
"There is currently no investigation I know of," she said.
The DA's safety and security spokesman, Dianne Kohler-Barnard, yesterday called for Selebi to "stand down immediately", pending a full investigation into the nature of his relationship and links with Agliotti.
"The cloud hanging over the commissioner is now of such proportions the minister of safety and security has no option but to remove him," Kohler-Barnard said.
She said the man leading the nation's fight against crime "should be above reproach".
