One of the SA National Defence Force's most senior soldiers has died.

Lieutenant-General Sipho Binda (54), the SANDF's Chief of Joint Operations, died yesterday in 1 Military Hospital in Tshwane shortly after undergoing a minor operation.

Binda, a former Umkhonto weSizwe and National Peacekeeping Force member, underwent surgery following a car accident which happened on Saturday.

The SANDF said the cause of his death was still unknown but doctors at the hospital believe Binda may have died of heart failure.
